First it was the Jinnah episode which put the BJP in an untenable position. A typical Hindu nationalist can never support a man like Jinnah who was nothing more than an opportunist and exploited the Congress’ weak policy to carve out a piece of land for Muslims without taking all of them along. India now has lesser land and more Muslims. A losing proposition from any account. So Advani hurt us all in a big way. His assistant Sudheendra Kulkarni was busy doing even more damage to the party in a crucial election. That campaign with him lifting weights to the tune “abhi toh main jawan hoon” was nothing short of a pathetic disaster. The BJP under the Advani leadership ran such a lousy campaign that the UPA with no achievements and multiple failures on the terror front came back with more seats. Advani should have shouldered the blame for an abysmal performance and retired. Instead he is still hanging on to a seat in the loksabha instead of developing a good younger leader.
Now we find out that he is apologizing the Sonia Gandhi without consulting the senior party members who are now in-charge. All this when scams are tumbling out of closet everyday and even the most liberal Congress apologizers are suspecting complicity to the highest levels of Congress leadership. He has again put the BJP on the back foot. No one can fathom the reason behind this latest flub by a man whose only accomplishment was the rath yatra which was a couple of decades ago. His tenure was a home minister was not a very good one either. It took him a very long time to ban the SIMI whose culpability in various anti national activities was well known.
We all know that the BJP is the only viable option to the Congress. Right now under the leadership of the younger members, the party seems to be making all the right moves. They do now want some irresponsible person coming along and tossing a monkey wrench in this otherwise well tuned machine.
Advaniji has to realize that his time is well past. If he does not retire soon and stops all this inexplicable activities then his legacy, whatever it is, will be tarnished forever.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed welcomed Advani's apology, but there came a tongue-in-cheek attack from Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni that she had thought Advani had "retired" leaving space for younger people like Swaraj and Jaitley who are now the Opposition leaders of the two Houses of Parliament.
